One afternoon after school, my mom called and asked if my sister and I could bring her food to work. She hadn’t been given lunch that day. We barely had anything at home, but we scraped together a simple vegetable salad and walked it across town—hungry ourselves, but determined she wouldn’t be.
When we arrived, she looked surprised, almost embarrassed. She thanked us softly and smiled when she opened the container. We could tell it wasn’t really about the food—it was about knowing someone cared.
