I’m Eleanor, 90 years old and widowed. After my husband died, my house grew painfully quiet. Calls stopped. Visits faded. My grandchildren were always “too busy” for the woman who once raised them.
So I made a decision.
I promised each of my five grandchildren a $2 million inheritance—on one strict condition: they had to visit me every week. And they had to keep it secret.
Every single one of them agreed without hesitation.
For three months, they came by on separate days. At first, it felt wonderful to have company again. But it didn’t take long to see the difference.
Four of them treated visits like an obligation. They checked their phones, complained about being bored, stayed just long enough to count it. They were there for the money.
Susan, my granddaughter, was different.
She cooked, cleaned, listened, and asked if I was okay. She talked about her kids, her dreams, her worries. She came not because she had to—but because she cared.
Finally, I called them all together and told them the truth: I’d lied. There was no inheritance.
The room exploded in anger. One by one, they stormed out—furious that their “reward” was gone.
All except Susan.
She hugged me and asked if I was okay.
