I was seven months pregnant, exhausted in that special way that comes with carrying both a baby and a full day on your feet. I was riding the bus home after a long shift, staring out the window and counting the stops until I could finally sit down and breathe.
A few stops in, an older woman climbed aboard. She moved carefully, steadying herself on the rail, not fragile but deliberate. Without thinking, I stood and offered her my seat.
She accepted with a quiet expression that wasn’t quite a smile, not quite gratitude — something deeper. She sat beside me, folding her hands neatly in her lap.
Every so often, she glanced at my belly, then at my face, like she was seeing something familiar. There was no awkwardness in it, just a strange warmth, as if she were remembering a chapter of her own life through me.
Each time our eyes met, I smiled. She returned it with a look that made me feel unexpectedly understood.
For the rest of the ride, we sat in comfortable silence. The city rushed past the windows, people came and went, and yet it felt like time slowed just for that moment.
