I Gave My Colleague $300 for Her “Sick ”Son”—Four Days Later, I Showed Up at Her House Ready to Confront Her, and What I Discovered

Posted on January 17, 2026 by Aleena Irshad

I still remember Carol’s trembling hands when she came to my desk that afternoon. The office buzzed softly as she stood there, eyes red, clutching her phone. She asked to speak privately, and in the hallway, she broke down. Her seven-year-old son had been diagnosed with a serious autoimmune condition. The medication was urgent and expensive. She needed $300—just enough to get through the week.

That money was meant for my own son’s school trip. I’d saved for months. Still, watching a mother plead for her child, I couldn’t say no. I transferred it that day. She hugged me tightly, whispering that she’d never forget it.

Four days later, everything unraveled.

I overheard coworkers excitedly talking about a dinner Carol was hosting. Everyone was invited—except me. The timing felt cruel. Had I been played? Doubt gnawed at me all day.

That evening, I drove to her house, heart pounding. When Carol opened the door, her face went pale. Inside, there was no fancy setup—just coworkers, half-taped balloons, and a sagging banner.

Someone muttered, “The surprise is ruined.”

It was then Carol broke down. The dinner was for me—my ten-year work anniversary. She’d been planning it quietly, on a tight budget. Her son was truly sick. The money I gave her helped cover groceries, decorations, and a small cake.

“I just wanted to give something back,” she said through tears.

Shame washed over me. I hugged her and apologized. That night reminded me not to judge too quickly—and that kindness, even when it costs us, often comes back in unexpected ways.
