Make sure you know what the weather will be like before you book a tour and therefore what the landscape will look like. Also make sure you know exactly what the tour you are booking includes in terms of duration, accommodation options, guide and itinerary. Even if you decide to book a tour on arrival in Uyuni, try to do a little research on the company you choose and check reviews. You’ll need a warm sleeping bag (tour companies provide these, often at an additional charge), and don’t forget to pack warm clothing. Daytime can often feel pleasantly warm in the sun, but after it sets temperatures can easily plummet to around -10°C. If you’re booking a budget tour, expect there to be an additional cost.
The thermal waters are delightfully warm and while you’re bathing you can soak up the beautiful scenery. While you might not fancy stripping off when it’s -10°C, you absolutely won’t regret it if you do – trust me! The hot springs of Polques are the perfect place to take a break and relax. Utilising the abundant material to hand, the innovative locals created entire buildings out of salt bricks. (Note that Incahausi can become inaccessible in the wet season due to flooding.) In the middle of the salt wilderness, this tiny oasis is covered in towering cacti.

How did this massive salt flat form? (Geological origin)

Now one of the key stops on Salar de Uyuni tours, it’s become something of a tourist trap. The area was once covered by a huge saltwater lake, which dried up some 30,000–40,000 years ago. The focal point of any Salar de Uyuni tour is, of course, the world’s largest salt flat. Known locally as Salar de Uyuni, the salt flats are part of the Altiplano, a vast plateau that extends for 965 km from southern Peru to the southwestern corner of Bolivia. As the largest salt flat on Earth, the Salar de Uyuni is widely regarded as one of the most effective natural calibration sites for Earth-observing satellites. Multiple fatal incidents have occurred at the salt flat as a result of poorly maintained vehicles, untrained drivers, speeding, a disregard for the inhospitable conditions, and lack of regulation for tour companies.
Collectively, these features make the Salar de Uyuni approximately five times more effective for satellite calibration than the surface of the open ocean. Salar de Uyuni is a popular tourist destination, and consequently a number of hotels have been built in the area. Because of its location, large area, and flatness, the Salar is a major car transport route across the Bolivian Altiplano, except when seasonally covered with water. However, except for January, even in the rainy season the number of rainy days is fewer than 5 per month. It is covered with a solid salt crust varying in thickness between tens of centimeters and a few meters. Lacustrine mud that is interbedded with salt and saturated with brine underlies the surface of Salar de Uyuni.

Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon)

Learning about the cultural aspect of Uyuni will enhance the experience of your trip to be not only a trip of sightseeing, it will be a good experience of humanity. You may also observe how the salt is extracted, processed and rolled into souvenirs, which is an ideal method of helping communities locally. Excursion to the nearby villages such as Colchani where people make their living by making artisan salt and craft through the traditional ways. Other than its natural beauty, the area surrounding Salar de Uyuni is very culturally diverse.

• Dry Season (May to November):

Be warned that the accommodation on the budget tours is likely to be very basic. These are shared tours with five or six people per jeep and often with a Spanish-speaking guide. If you have time, take a longer tour – you won’t regret it.” If you’d like to explore further afield and get out into the surrounding landscape then opt for a two- or three-day tour. Another popular option for travellers heading north from Chile is to take a tour from the border town of San Pedro de Atacama.
These islands are the tops of ancient volcanic domes that remained above water even when the whole area was a lake.As the lakes dried and the salt crust formed, the domes stayed as isolated high points. Since the salt flat is already extremely smooth, this water film becomes a near-perfect reflective layer. When water levels dropped, evaporation increased. And every time the water pulled back, it left behind thick salt deposits, clays, silts, and evaporite minerals. This is produced by a water layer that sits on top of the salt in the wet season (December to April). It’s also possible to take private tours for the ultimate customised experience.
The first night’s stay in a salt hotel was very clean and comfortable, with fresh bedsheets, towels, and toilet paper provided. In 2017, on the first night, we stayed in private rooms in a salt hotel. If you want to see the sunset at the Salar de Uyuni, ask your travel agency whether it’s included. Most tour agencies start their tours at 10.30 am.
If travelling to Uyuni by bus you will arrive early in the morning (around  6 or 7 am) and most tours begin at around 10 am, giving you time to scout around for a tour you like. During this time the salt is covered by a layer of water that provides a dramatic mirror effect and creates unique conditions for fabulous photos. At this time of year you will enjoy the quintessential views of the salt flats, with vast expanses of white landscape extending to the horizon.

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

In Colchani, there are several hostels, a couple of salt museums, and a souvenir market where all tours stop by. It’s a good way to explore Uyuni salt flats as long as you don’t plan to cycle further to the altiplano. We saw a couple of people cycling on the Uyuni salt flats.
These months are also less cold than the dry season. Some would argue the vistas during the wet season are even more mesmerising than in the dry season. The rainy season (December to April) brings its own beauty.

Day 2 – Heading south to Laguna Colorada

Experience guides offer travelers innovative ways to discover iconic destinations, featuring unique adventures and trip-building tools for personalized journeys. The crust is extremely hard—vehicles can drive over it in dry season—yet it has the ability to reshape itself when water interaction begins again. Each polygon is like the surface expression of a slowly growing salt plate. Because of this, NASA and ESA regularly use Salar de Uyuni to calibrate satellite altimeters—something only this kind of surface can offer.
Its unusual shape was formed over time by strong winds eroding the sandstone. They appear as small, pinkish spots in the photo below. On our 2025 tour, the sunset was included in the itinerary, and we had wine and snacks while watching the sunset. There are usually fewer tourists and no entry fee. The island is full of giant cacti, it’s awesome seeing them up close.

  • The Train Cemetery, also known as “Cementerio de Trenes,” is a significant tourist attraction near Uyuni, Bolivia, and within the Salar de Uyuni salt flats.
  • Sustainability has gained a critical concern as an increasing number of tourists head to Salar de Uyuni.
  • Multiple fatal incidents have occurred at the salt flat as a result of poorly maintained vehicles, untrained drivers, speeding, a disregard for the inhospitable conditions, and lack of regulation for tour companies.
  • I am not a fan of commercial tours and wanted to experience Salar de Uyuni independently.
  • There is nothing really of interest in Uyuni itself so it’s not worth spending much time here.

Local Time in New Delhi, India

Most travellers spend 2-3 days exploring Salar de Uyuni and its surroundings, which provides ample opportunity to visit the salt flats, lagoons, and geysers. However, travelers should take great care in choosing which tour operator to go with when visiting the salt flats. The great news is there is no bad time to visit the salt flats in Bolivia and each season has its advantages. You can explore the Uyuni salt flats on your own, but after doing research and weighing the pros and cons, we decided to join a standard 3-day tour. This breathtaking natural wonder attracts thousands of travellers each year, who come to marvel at the majestic salt flats spanning over 10,000 square kilometres.

  • Around 2007, a new hotel was built, under the name Palacio de Sal, in a new location at the eastern edge of Salar de Uyuni, 25 km away from the town of Uyuni.
  • That’s what it’s like when you visit the Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia’s enormous salt flat that stretches as far as your eyes can see.
  • During the rainy season (usually December–March), a thin layer of water spreads over the salt surface—sometimes just a few millimeters, sometimes a bit more.
  • When we did a tour in 2025, we paid extra for private rooms.
  • Challviri Hot Springs are tucked away near Laguna Challviri and are much quieter and usually less visited.
  • The first night’s stay in a salt hotel was very clean and comfortable, with fresh bedsheets, towels, and toilet paper provided.
  • For travelers on a short trip that want to make the most of their time exploring.

Solar de Manaña geysers are located at an altitude of more than 15,912 ft/ 4,850m. Make sure to charge your devices during this time. Note that to enter Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Avaroa, you need to pay an entrance fee of Bs 150 (not included in the tour price). In reality, its deep red color comes from red sediments and the pigments of algae and microorganisms living in the lake. According to the local folklore, the water in Laguna Colorada is the blood of the Gods. It sits at an altitude of 14,000 ft/ 4,270 m in Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve, close to the Chilean border.
For travelers looking to design a trip that feels unique. These guides provide in-depth insights for your trips, helping you explore destinations deeply for unforgettable experiences, whether popular or off the beaten path. For travelers seeking the most comprehensive insights. Salar de Uyuni is one of those rare landscapes that feels like Earth trying to show what it’s capable of. Very few places on Earth bring together three simple elements—minerals, water, and light—in such a dramatic way.
English-speaking guides aren’t standard so check with the tour company if one is included. Unless you’re confident in your Spanish skills, you’ll likely get more out of a tour with a guide who speaks English. There was so much more to see than I expected and the locations on days two and three were far less crowded because there were no daytrippers at these sites.
Laguna Verde (Green Lake) turns green when strong winds lift the sediments of arsenic, copper, lead, and other minerals from the bottom of the lake. To add to the experience, we could see flamingos at Laguna Challviri. On our 2025 tour, we practically had the place to ourselves and enjoyed it more, as there was only one other group besides us. Challviri Hot Springs are tucked away near Laguna Challviri and are much quieter and usually less visited. The water is about 29 degrees Celsius and contains minerals that relieve the symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism.
When it dried, it left behind two modern lakes, Poopó and Uru Uru, and two major salt deserts, Salar de Coipasa and the larger Salar de Uyuni. Uyuni originates from the Aymara language and means a pen (enclosure); Uyuni is also the name of a town that serves as a gateway for tourists visiting the Salar. The large area, clear skies, and exceptional flatness of the surface make the Salar ideal for calibrating the altimeters of Earth observation satellites. The Salar was formed as a result of transformations of seven Late Pleistocene spinmaya no deposit bonus code lakes whose progressive desiccation led to the accumulation of extensive evaporitic salt deposits.
