I can’t have children. At 23, I was diagnosed with congenital infertility, and the dream of becoming a mother felt like it ended there.
But my husband, Stephen, believed in another path. “We adopt,” he said. “We give a child love.”
Shortly after we began the process, Stephen left on a month-long medical mission overseas. I visited an orphanage alone—and that’s where I met Giselle, a quiet seven-year-old coloring a rainbow house “for people who don’t have homes.”
I felt it instantly. She was meant to be ours.
Three weeks later, she moved in. The house that once felt empty filled with laughter. She’d never seen Stephen before—not even in photos.
When he finally came home, I took her to the door.
“Giselle, this is your father,” I said.
She looked at him… and screamed.
“OH NO, NOT HIM AGAIN!”
She hid behind me, begging me not to let him touch her.
Later, Stephen explained: a year earlier, he had treated her mother after a severe accident. Giselle had seen him trying to restart her heart with defibrillator paddles. She thought he was hurting her.
Her mother didn’t survive.
Giselle believed Stephen had killed her.
We later learned her father abandoned her at an orphanage gate, blaming her for her mother’s death.
That night, I explained the truth using her teddy bear.
“You were trying to save my mommy?” she asked Stephen.
“I tried as hard as I could,” he said.
A week later, she looked at our family photo and whispered, “I think I’m home now.”
