Anna Dawson, best known for her role in Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 88, around six months after the passing of her husband.
Dawson gained recognition among audiences for playing Violet, the wealthy sister of Hyacinth Bucket, in the popular 1990s sitcom Keeping Up Appearances. The character was later fully introduced on screen after initially being heard only as a voice.
Her death was announced by her church community in New Zealand, where she had been living in later life. In a social media post, Christ Church Anglican Kororāreka Russell described her as a “much treasured member” and confirmed she “died peacefully” on Saturday, 27 June. The announcement noted she had used her married name, Anna Boulter (née Dawson).
Tributes have since been shared by friends and fans online. Among them, Carol Challis wrote: “Sad news. An old friend. God bless you, Anna.”
Born in Bolton in the late 1930s, Anna Dawson began her career on stage, appearing in West End musicals before moving into television. Her early screen work included the BBC police drama Dixon of Dock Green in 1964.
She went on to appear in a range of British television favourites such as Z-Cars, Keep It in the Family, and the children’s programme Rainbow. Over her career, she also worked alongside well-known entertainers including Benny Hill and the comedy duo Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise.
Keeping Up Appearances became Dawson’s final television role. At its peak, the sitcom attracted audiences of around 13 million viewers, cementing its place as one of Britain’s most-watched comedies of its era.
After the series ended in 1995, Dawson retired from acting and moved to New Zealand with her husband, John Boulter, a soloist known for his work on The Black and White Minstrel Show. Boulter died in December last year.
Her passing comes months after the death of her on-screen co-star Patricia Routledge, who portrayed Hyacinth Bucket and died aged 96 in October last year.
