I was only 12 years old when my dad suddenly lost his job. Overnight, everything in our house changed. The fridge was almost empty, the bills kept piling up, and most mornings I went to school pretending I wasn’t hungry. Mrs. Carter continued, “Years ago, when you were in my class, your father stayed after school one rainy afternoon.”
I looked at her, confused.
“He saw me crying because my husband had been hospitalized, and I didn’t know how I was going to pay for medicine. Your father quietly slipped an envelope into my desk.”
I blinked.
“I tried to give it back. He refused.”
“‘Everyone needs help sometimes,’ he told me.”
My chest tightened.
Mrs. Carter wiped away a tear.
“That envelope paid for my husband’s medication. It bought us another six months together before he passed away. Those six months meant everything to our family.”
I had never heard that story before.
She smiled at Joy.
“When Joy told me about the boy who never ate lunch, I knew exactly who he was. I didn’t tell her to help you. I only told her what your father once did for us.”
Joy shrugged shyly.
“I just thought… if your dad helped my family, maybe it was our turn.”
I couldn’t hold back my tears.
That night I went home and told my father everything.
He looked embarrassed.
“I hoped nobody would ever remember that,” he said quietly.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
He smiled.
