I Defended a Mom Who Stole a $5 Pen—25 Years Later, Her Son Found Me

Early in my career, I defended Adina, a single mother who stole a blue pen for her son’s birthday because she couldn’t afford it. I convinced the judge to give her a second chance.

Twenty-five years later, a young lawyer named Milan entered my office for an interview.

“Did your mother ever tell you about a blue pen?” I asked.

“Every birthday,” he replied. “She said a lawyer saved her life by truly seeing her.”

Milan was Adina’s son. She had since passed away, but he still had the pen she gave him on his sixth birthday. I hired him immediately.

Months later, Milan won a free eviction case for a struggling single mother—who turned out to be my estranged niece. His kindness saved her home and reunited our family.

Milan later gave me the blue pen. I displayed it in our lobby with a plaque:

“This pen changed two lives. Maybe it can change more.”

Never underestimate a small act of kindness. Its impact may return decades later.
