Almost four years after my husband passed, leaving me to raise our 8-year-old alone, I started learning who he really was—and it wasn’t who I thought.
Six weeks ago, a process server came to my door with a court order for a DNA test tied to another child. I handed him the death certificate and thought that was the end of it.
It wasn’t.
Soon after, a woman showed up claiming her child was his. I was stunned. I never imagined he could have betrayed me like that. The timing barely made sense—but the resemblance was enough to raise questions.
Then she pulled out a DNA test and demanded part of his estate, like she’d won something.
I told her the truth: there was no estate. “Half of nothing is still nothing,” I said.
What she didn’t like was this—there were assets that never went through probate. A rental property, gifted to us years ago, was jointly owned with survivorship rights. When he died, it became mine. I’ve since sold it, and that money is going toward my child’s future.
I understand her situation. I truly do. But I have a child to protect, too.
Legally, I’m in the clear. Emotionally? It’s complicated.
