Late one night, my husband’s ex-wife called me crying.
Her voice sounded weak, fragile, almost unfamiliar. She said she was very sick and begged to see her daughter one last time.
But all I could think about were the years she disappeared.
The missed birthdays.
The broken promises.
The little girl left heartbroken over and over again.
So before she could finish, I told her no.
I told her my stepdaughter was mine now in every way that mattered.
Then I hung up.
Two days later, she died during surgery.
At first, I convinced myself I had protected my daughter from more confusion and pain. But afterward, the silence inside our home felt unbearable — like something unfinished had settled there beside us.
A month later, a package arrived.
Inside was an old teddy bear from my stepdaughter’s earliest childhood and a handwritten note from her mother.
She didn’t ask for forgiveness.
She only asked for the bear to be given to her daughter “when the time is right.”
That was the moment I realized something painful:
She hadn’t stayed away because she didn’t love her child.
She stayed away because she never learned how to stay at all.
I hid the bear for years.
But now, watching the woman my daughter has become, I wonder if she deserves to know something important:
She was loved twice — even if one love arrived far too late.
